I have been convinced that the source of inspiration for the ion cannon in command and conquer is thermite. All you have to do is to youtube thermite and take a look for yourself. Unfortunately the ion cannon of tiberium wars has many other special effects which don't resemble thermite. Nevertheless I have to say they are pretty cool.
